You have Googled this. Maybe more than once. Maybe in the middle of the night when you could not sleep because you were trying to make sense of something that nobody around you can explain.
You hear things. Or you see things. Or you feel things — other people's emotions, other people's pain — so strongly that you cannot tell where they end and you begin. And it has been happening for long enough that you are starting to wonder if something is actually wrong with you.
I want to tell you something before you read any further.
You are not crazy. You are not broken. And you are not alone.
I have been working with people like you for over 20 years. Teenagers. Young adults. People who spent years thinking they were losing their mind — until they found out they were not losing anything. They were gaining access to something most people cannot perceive.
This article is going to be honest with you. I am not going to tell you everything is fine and you should just relax. I am going to explain what is actually happening — including the part that is genuinely complicated and that most people are too afraid to say out loud.
Why This Is So Confusing — The Rail Problem
Here is the truth that most people in this space will not say directly: some of the experiences that come with a spiritual gift look very similar to the early signs of certain mental health conditions, including schizophrenia.
Hearing voices. Seeing things. Feeling like reality is shifting. Feeling like you are receiving information from somewhere outside yourself.
These experiences exist on two rails. One rail is a spiritual gift. The other rail is a mental health condition. And in the early stages — especially for teenagers — they can look almost identical from the outside.
The danger is when someone walks only one rail.
If you have a spiritual gift and you are treated only as if you have a mental health disorder — medicated, told your experiences are not real, taught to suppress everything — the gift does not disappear. It goes underground. And what happens when a gift goes underground without understanding is that it can start to create real psychological damage. Not because the gift is a disorder. But because suppression without framework is its own kind of crisis.
And if someone has a genuine mental health condition and it is treated only as a spiritual gift — without proper clinical support — that is equally dangerous. The right support gets delayed. Real harm can follow.
Both rails are real. The skill is knowing which one you are on. Or whether you need both.
So How Do You Tell the Difference?
After 20 years I have learned to look at specific things. Not just what someone is experiencing — but how they are experiencing it.
Here is the clearest way I know to explain it:
A mental disorder gives orders. A spiritual gift gives information.
When a psychiatric condition is driving the experience, the voices or visions are commanding. They create compulsive behavior. They feel like an invasion you cannot control or respond to. They tell you to do things. They do not make sense over time. They escalate.
A spiritual gift works differently. It shows up as information. It has patterns. It responds to your own awareness of it. It gets stronger when you are emotionally open and calmer when you are grounded. It can be triggered by specific places, people, or emotional states. And — this is important — it does not tell you to harm yourself or anyone else.
A gift can be exhausting. It can be overwhelming. It can feel completely out of control when you have no training. But underneath the chaos, there is a structure to it. And that structure can be learned.
What a Spiritual Gift Actually Feels Like
You probably already know some of this. But nobody has given it a name. So let me.
→ Clairaudience — you hear sounds, voices, names, or words that have no external source. It is not in your head in the way a thought is. It feels like it comes from somewhere else.
→ Clairvoyance — you see images, symbols, or short scenes that carry information. They flash across your mind and they turn out to mean something.
→ Clairsentience — you feel other people's emotions and sometimes their physical sensations as if they were your own. Walking into a room tells you immediately what happened there. Touching something gives you information about the person who owned it.
→ Claircognizance — you simply know things. Not because you were told. Not because you figured it out. You just know. And you are right more often than makes sense.
If you recognize yourself in more than one of these, you are not imagining it. These are documented, named, studied abilities. Yale has published research on clairaudience. The Rhine Research Center has studied these phenomena for decades. This is not fringe territory.
The Part Nobody Talks About — The Exhaustion
A spiritual gift without training is exhausting in a very specific way. And I want to name this because I think it will help you recognize yourself.
You probably feel things at a scale that is completely different from the people around you. Not bigger by a little — bigger by an order of magnitude. While everyone else is feeling emotions from minus ten to plus ten, you are feeling them from minus one hundred to plus one hundred.
That is not a metaphor. That is what gifted people describe to me consistently. The Saturday afternoon at the mall that wrecks you for three days. The hospital visit that leaves you unable to function. The person who sits next to you on the bus and whose grief you carry home without knowing why.
This is not weakness. This is what happens when you are wired to perceive things other people cannot perceive, and you have no training for how to manage it.
The gift is not the problem. The absence of a framework is the problem.
What Happens When You Get the Framework
I have watched this shift happen hundreds of times. A person comes to me in confusion and shame. They have been carrying this alone for years. Sometimes since childhood. They have been told they are too sensitive, too dramatic, too much. Or they have been told they are mentally ill. Or both.
And in a single session — sometimes in the first fifteen minutes — something changes. Not because I did something miraculous. Because I gave them the vocabulary for what they were already experiencing.
When you have a name for what you experience, you stop being afraid of it. When you understand the pattern, you can start to work with it instead of fighting it. When you know this has a structure that can be learned, the chaos starts to organize itself.
"I went from someone with a lot of self-doubt — borderline thinking I might be crazy — to a confident medium. In one day."
What I Want You to Do Right Now
If you are a teenager or young adult reading this, here is what I want you to do.
First — stop trying to suppress it. Suppression costs enormous energy and it does not work long-term. Fighting your gift is like trying to hold water in your fist. It does not go away. It just makes you exhausted.
Second — start documenting your experiences. Write down what happens, when, in what circumstances, and what you felt physically. Patterns will start to emerge. And patterns are the beginning of understanding.
Third — do not navigate this alone. Not because you cannot handle it. But because everyone who has ever developed mastery over their gift had someone who could explain the structure to them. You deserve that too.
And if you are reading this with a parent — show them this article. Because the people who love you deserve to understand what is actually happening. Not so they can fix it. So they can stop being afraid of it.
